Dream kitchen for family’s ‘forever’ home
Properties built in the 1970’s have the advantage of larger than average room sizes and this was one of the things that attracted Laura and Nick Grant to their detached home, as well as its location in a pretty village with its convenient infant and junior schools.
The couple had a vision to extend the property to create a very spacious split level open plan living, kitchen, dining space, with the kitchen on the upper level with a contemporary style clear glass divide between the kitchen and the lower living dining area, with large patio doors out into the garden.
Even though the kitchen is on the upper level and is the first part you enter from the spacious hallway, the ceiling height is very generous, adding to the feeling of light and space.
The couple had spoken to a number of kitchen companies and gained some quotes for both bespoke kitchens and ‘off the shelf’ kitchens from national suppliers.
“We felt that something like a Howdens or Magnet kitchen would have been a big compromise, so we visited a few bespoke kitchen showrooms, but found that their designers wanted to impose their ideas and designs on us, which all seemed the same, rather than take into account what we wanted,” commented Laura Grant.
“Then on our way home from a pub lunch we came across the Beau-Port showroom and met their head designer Mark, who was very open with his ideas on design and suggesting things without forcing anything on us. We were also pleased that Beau-Port’s finished kitchen worked out slightly cheaper than the quotes we had received from other bespoke kitchen companies, but for a much better quality kitchen. We felt it was a reasonable price for the quality handmade solid wood kitchen and the flexibility of the design to fit our space perfectly.”
Laura had always been drawn more towards the traditional style of kitchen and liked Beau-Port’s Shaker style of bespoke kitchens. “This is going to be our ‘forever’ home to bring up our family and we wanted a kitchen that would last and not date. Once the extension had been completed we had a completely blank canvas and we needed some expert guidance, which we had from Mark, who was great to work with and we knew that we had connected with the right designer.”
“We were very impressed with Beau-Port’s large showrooms, especially the Shaker style bespoke kitchens and it was good to also see so many other styles of kitchens in the showroom. It was also interesting to see how regularly the company updates its showroom displays.”
Like most people looking to invest in a new kitchen, Laura Grant had researched all the styles and types of kitchens she and her husband favoured, using Pinterest and other sources, which Beau-Port designer Mark Johnson took into account when creating the overall design of their handmade bespoke Shaker style kitchen.
SHAKER BESPOKE FURNITURE
These traditionally made kitchens with in-frame doors, finished in timber or hand-painted with Farrow and Ball muted toned high quality paints, have solid oak dovetailed drawer boxes with soft close, butt hinges and birch ply veneer interiors. Beau-Port also supplied and installed all of the appliances.
The kitchen worktops and the worktop to the island are in granite, which has also been used behind the hob as a practical splash-back and to form a practical shelf for cooking items.
“Mark showed us different design examples for our kitchen and he kept going until the design was perfect for us. His drawings were very specific and helpful and we loved the ideas he would come up with and the different ways we could reconfigure things, such as creating more space around the hob and a shelf behind it for regular cooking items and utensils.”
“We also appreciated the attention to detail that you don’t get in a standard kitchen such as the way that Mark added the oak inset on the open shelving on the island, which adds contrast and warmth and also the other touches of unpainted oak around the kitchen with the inset trays for example. Plus the under-lighting around the island and clever way he has hidden the plumbing pipework in the under sink unit.”
“We liked the look of the range cookers but felt they were a bit of a compromise in terms of oven space and so Mark designed in two separate large ovens that give the look of a range, set under the gas hob and then he designed the perfect surround.” The microwave has been installed into the island on the side just opposite the two ovens and has warming drawers underneath.
“Mark came over when the old kitchen was removed and he was very good at working off the architect’s plan and working with our builder, liaising with the various trades. He was also really good when we had to delay the installation while waiting for the underfloor heating to get sorted, Mark was really helpful regarding this and stored our kitchen for a further 2 months with no extra charge.”
“When the kitchen was delivered Mark was here to sort everything out and he worked with us on the final decisions about the design such as deciding on exactly where the island would sit, to make sure it was in the exact place for our us.”
“We were so pleased that the kitchen was installed and finished within 2 weeks and by the end of the first week we could use the kitchen, it was all timed so well with the electrician and the plumber.
Beau-Port supplied all of the appliances and Mark took the time to show us how they all worked.”
Laura Grant was enthusiastic about the many elements of the kitchen design that she likes the most and continued: ”I love the island and it is such a good place for people to gather around, perch and chat and the under-lighting around the island adds more warmth to the kitchen.
Also the way that Mark has designed the surround around the hob, the brushed metal handles, the high quality of everything, the perfect fit and the fact that this kitchen won’t date.”
“More than anything else we love the way that this is where everyone wants to be. Even though we have a separate living room, people want to be in this kitchen and when we had a family event everyone gathered here and wanted to stay in the space.”
OVERALL CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE
“Absolutely brilliant and we could not fault anything!” commented Laura Grant. “The kitchen was the most seamless part of the whole project, Mark and his team made it so easy. He was always so good at coming back to us, keeping us informed at every stage and we like him very much on a personal level, he was great to work with. We have already spoken to him about designing and installing further furniture for the far end of the kitchen. We would definitely recommend Beau-Port to our friends and family. ”
