Art Deco B & B gets BP design expertise
Steve Macaulay and his wife Angela already had some clear ideas about what they wanted and needed for their successful and elegant bed and breakfast business. They had ‘shopped around’ and looked at other kitchen companies, but decided that the unique products and design expertise gave them the confidence to award the contract to Beau-Port - not only for a new kitchen, but a utility and home office area to also be incorporated into the same space.
A spacious extension had been added to the existing Art Deco building to create a practical and workable kitchen for the B & B business with some private retreating space for Steve and his wife and a separate office area. The completed kitchen has cleverly concealed the office area away behind a mid-height unit which also provides a practical storage solution close to the kitchen sink, dishwasher and drinks preparation area and is ideally located to store all the B & B china and glassware. There is also a stylish roll down counter top shutter unit that hides the toasters neatly away out of sight when not required.
Beau-Port also custom built units for the hidden utility area to house freestanding washing machines, plus a tall unit to hide the boiler.
The units used in the project were from German kitchen manufacturer Rotpunkt with Bardolia Oak doors - a new design from Rotpunkt which uses their Synchronous Pore/wooden grain-structure finish. “I believe no other company at the time produced such a product which is a unique featured melamine finish with wood grain texture that matches the actual grain on the panel or door. It’s quite a deep and interesting door grain. We contrasted this with white Rotpunkt Zerox ‘Icy White’ doors, a new colour recently released,” said Jacob Johnson.
Some tall storage units were also part of the plan and Jacob Johnson commented: “We felt that rather than the units being set on the floor like normal tall units, we came up with the idea that it would look far better to have them all in a line, built into a frame jutting out of the wall to give them a ‘floating’ effect.”
Steve Macaulay commented: “We had not seen the ‘floating’ unit idea before and also not seen the kind of products that Beau-Port have anywhere else. We hadn’t seen a contemporary style kitchen with wood effect that also had the texture of the wood grain and we liked the warmth and texture of this material when Beau-Port showed it to us. The product was so different to what we had seen elsewhere and no more expensive and very good value for money, not just for a kitchen, but also office and utility area and a bespoke sideboard unit for the living dining area.”
The tall units house Bosch appliances including fridge/freezer, microwave, steamer and two ovens complete with warming drawers which Steve finds particularly helpful when B & B guests are late coming down to breakfast. A Bosch induction hob sits in a peninsula unit overlooking the family/dining space
Steve is the primary user of the new kitchen and he commented on the things he loves about his new working kitchen:
“There are so many aspects of this kitchen that are really practical and make it such a great space to work in. I love the instant boiling water tap, which is a so helpful when I suddenly have 12 people coming down to breakfast at the same time and all wanting hot drinks and it saves a lot of time. The Wharf work surfaces are great as they are all seamless, stain proof and very easy to keep clean and also has a warm feel to it.”
The challenge Beau-Port kitchens skilled craftsman fitters faced on this project was installing a kitchen within a kitchen that was still having to be used to service the B & B business, with Steve needing to provide full English breakfasts and alternative breakfasts to up to 12 guests each morning and he commented: “The fitting process was really excellent and faster than we thought, no fuss or hassle, ensuring we had electric and water and that our temporary range was moved to accommodate the kitchen fit and to cope with serving our B & B guests on time. The finish and fit are first class.”
“A friend of my wife’s recommended Beau-Port to us as she had recently had a kitchen designed and installed by the company. They understood how important it was to get everything just right, listening to what we wanted and interpreting it in practical and versatile ways. We found Jacob and Mark so easy to work with, very professional, approachable, great products and design input. We have been recommending Beau-Port to further friends and family.”
