Bespoke media centre hits the right note
When Harry and Audrey Cruickshank moved from Woking into their new Hampshire home backing onto the South Downs National Park, they had very clear ideas about how they wanted to use their sitting room. They both enjoy listening to music and watching a good film, as well as collecting unique pieces of art.
They decided that a single piece of furniture, combining a media centre with storage for their film collection, a display area for their art and space for family photographs, would offer the perfect solution to their needs. What they didn’t want was to see all the wiring, leads and plugs that are required for today’s technology - HD ready wide screen TV, sound system, DVD player, lighting etc.,
Harry initially contacted a premium furniture brand about their project but found they were unable to deliver what the couple wanted.
“We approached Beau-Port with a very specific request, as they had been recommended to us by friends. The showroom demonstrated their creativity and style and highlighted the quality of their work,” commented Harry Cruickshank.
“Mark was very attentive and made some excellent suggestions for modifications that improved our original design for a large, complex media and storage unit. His attention to detail and engaging manner gave us the confidence that Beau-Port would deliver the results. The quote was also more competitive than one we had received from a premium brand, who were not able to be as flexible with the construction method required for our design.”
Audrey Cruickshank wanted to ensure that the new piece did not dominate the rectangular room.
She came up with the idea of raising the unit above the floor to create a ‘floating’ look that automatically allows the eye to see the whole width of the room at floor level. “Mark then suggested adding the LED lighting underneath the unit and on the top of the unit, which looks great and all the electrics for our TV, DVD and the lighting are cleverly hidden away yet accessible. I also valued Mark’s recommendation to wait until the unit was in place before selecting the handles, as this helped us to see exactly what they would look like on the unit in its final setting.”
The bespoke unit is finished in Farrow and Ball’s Wimborne White, with touch close drawers. Beau-Port’s head designer Mark Johnson also ensured that the design included the flexibility of space to accommodate a larger TV screen at a later date. The unit can also be removed in sections if the client wishes to move home in the future.
“We were also impressed with Beau-Port’s installation - Rob the fitter was brilliant, very pleasant and careful about the electrics and making sure it all worked well. He is a great asset to the business. Everything was finished to a high standard, it is far better than we anticipated and very good value for money. Mark and his team did a lovely job, it looks like it has always been there and improves the whole room. We are delighted.” said Audrey.
“They delivered on time and the installation was very professional and finished off to a high standard. In short, Beau-Port created a superb piece of furniture and we’re very happy indeed with it. Strongly recommended,” concluded Harry.
The bespoke media centre was designed and constructed in four section, mounted side by side on wall batons, leaving a 200ml space below the unit to create a ‘floating’ look. Channels were rebated into the top and bottom of the unit to install LED lighting strips with opaque covers and defuser to give a soft lighting effect. The unit was hand painted and the drawers are in Birch veneer with edge detail with the bottom cupboards rebutted for space for DVDs.
