Gallagher Kitchen Case Study - Church Crookham

Creating Spacious Open Plan Living Without Having To Extend.

When Andrea and Philip Gallager moved into their character property in Church Crookham 20 years ago, it had a very traditional ground floor layout with a separate kitchen and small utility room. A door from the kitchen accessed a separate dining room, which also had doors leading into a conservatory. The four separate spaces soon became three when the family realised they needed a larger kitchen and combined the utility room into the space.

But the family still felt as though they were living in a series of rooms and longed for a more modern open plan, spacious feel to the main living area of the home. Their children are now young adults and the couple felt that they didn't want to, or need to, enlarge the ground floor footprint, but just to make better use of the space and to create that much longed for open-plan look and feel.

Andrea and Philip knew that the kitchen would be the key starting point in their plan and began to look around at potential kitchen styles, brands and suppliers. Andrea Gallagher commented: "We spoke to a couple of kitchen companies, some were very inflexible on design and unable to give us what we wanted within our budget, others tried to push us into signing up immediately. Then we saw a Rotpunkt kitchen and knew that was the style and quality we wanted, so we found Beau-Port kitchens near Alton and worked with them on the design."

"We visited the Beau-Port showroom and it had such a nice family feel, a warm welcome and we immediately knew we would find what we wanted. We worked closely on the design with Beau-Port's designer Jacob Johnson and it was good to have his help in making decisions and to know that they would oversee the whole project."

The project included essential building work that combined the remaining three areas of kitchen, dining room and conservatory into one light and open-plan space, with Beau-Port project managing most aspects of the build, except the solid roof installation to the conservatory.

Shown here is the view from the kitchen looking through to the peninsula and dining area where we opened the wall up.

Jacob Johnson commented: "We restructured the area to combine the kitchen and dining room space into one. Once the conservatory had its new insulated roof and skylight in, making it warmer, it then extended that open plan feel into the rest of the area."

"A lot of our visitors think we have had an extension, they just can't believe how light and spacious it is," commented Andrea Gallagher. "Beau-Port has transformed the space that was already there. The area is so much more useable in so many ways - for relaxing, dining and cooking. We now have a formal dining area and then more casual eating area at the breakfast bar, which we use a lot of the time. It has become such a sociable space where we can cook, entertain and relax in."

"Working with Jacob on getting the design right for us and within our budget was a nice process and we enjoyed the feeling of being involved in that. He was really easy to work with and came up with good ideas. I also enjoyed the visits to the showroom and the time that Jacob gave to us to discuss every aspect of the project."

A peninsular unit worked best within the layout and gave the Gallagher's a more spacious work/cooking area and allowed for dining space for three people, plus additional storage. Jacob extended the wood effect side panels up the wall to create some useful shelving for hi-fi and a warm feel to that end of the kitchen. The peninsular unit is topped by a soft toned, flecked and slightly reflective quartz stone work top. The other worktops throughout the kitchen are Rotpunkt's wood effect Zerox SY Bardolia, which have also been used to create a splash-back.

A peninsula was best for this room to provide a social cooking space with plenty of free flowing walking space.

A rectangular induction hob was installed on the kitchen side of the peninsula unit, that allows for two people to cook at the same time and also gives more space for dining. Jacob also recommended the installation of a Falmec Twister, an ingenious Italian designed product that is not only an efficient venting system but also an elegant LED light. The Falmec Twister also eliminates odours and inactivates viruses, bacteria, allergens, moulds, fungi and spores by ionising and purifying the air, to give the air the fresh feel that you get being near to nature by waterfalls and by the sea. The system is designed to increase well-being and ensuring a healthy environment.

"I love the Falmec Twister, the Italian styling of it, the fact that most people think it is just an elegant light. It is very much in keeping with the design of the kitchen, the colour is just right and it keeps the space looking more open, much better than a traditional venting system, which would not have worked so well," continued Andrea Gallagher.

"We were keen to have someone project manage everything for us and Beau-Port did this so well and have a really good team who turned up when they said they would, got on with the work and knew what they were doing. They were also very good at reporting back to us and keeping us informed every step of the way."

"We felt that the price for what we got within our budget, the quality of the kitchen, the project management, personal service and appliances etc., was a very good package from Beau-Port. We price checked the appliances we got from Beau-Port and they gave us a really good deal."

Customer Experience:

"We felt that the price for what we got within our budget, the quality of the kitchen, the project management, personal service and appliances etc., was a very good package from Beau-Port. We price checked the appliances we got from Beau-Port and they gave us a really good deal."

"The things I love the most about the project are the open space, clean lines, the whole look - it is beautiful and functional. The peninsular cooking and dining space works so well for us. We sit at it working on our laptops, have breakfast and supper there, it is a really good work and relax space. We are very, very happy with everything and we are spending much more time in our new kitchen."

Shown here is the rest of the kitchen in the opposite colours to the peninsula, with Rotpunkt Bardolia Real Oak on the worktops/upstands and Weiss matt laminate doors.

Project Detail:

The client wanted a combination of white and wood effect units, with the wood effect to act as a warm contrast. The unit doors used were Rotpunkt Zerox XM extra matt white doors and panels with the peninsular and the wood effect Zerox SY Bardolia. The Quartz worktops are 30mm thick and are in Caesarstone Osprey 3141.

Beau-Port designer & project manager Jacob Johnson commented: "Our fitter Greg knocked the wall through from the kitchen into the dining room, installed a steel RSJ and then installed the kitchen. We were also involved in the electrical work in both the kitchen and dining areas as well as plumbing and plastering. The idea behind the colour scheme was contrasting opposites. We contrasted the white doors and the Bardolia on the worktops for the outside wall units and then the opposite on the peninsula, Bardolia on the doors and 'white' worktops. By having the wood grain on the peninsular, the smallest part of the kitchen, it meant it kept the bulk of the furniture light and airy."
