FAQ's about Boiling Water Taps

Is it cheaper to operate than my normal kettle?

Boiling a kettle can be a waste of water and time; with the Franke Minerva 3-in-1 Kettle Tap only the water required is used, meaning savings in water and electricity.

  1. Output Per Day (Watt): 15.6
  2. Output per year (kWh): 136.7
  3. Usage (kWh) (equiv. 1.551 per day): 56
  4. Total Usage (kWh): 195.7
  5. Total Cost (kWh = 0.215): 42.07

Is the water really 100°C boiling water?

Yes, the water is stored under pressure at 110°C in the Heating Tank, and is 100°C boiling water when it leaves the spout.

How safe is the Minerva tap?

The tap has a safety button which needs to be activated to allow the boiling water to be discharged, when this button is released the boiling water automatically cuts off.

Can I have the boiling water handle on the opposite side?

Yes, the Minerva tap can be fitted with the boiling water handle either to the left or to the right – the Franke logo is etched onto both sides of the tap

We recommend that you position the spout opposite to the boiling water control, bearing in mind the position of your sink bowl(s) and whether you are left or right handed.

Does the tap get hot in operation?

The Franke Minerva 3-in-1 Kettle Tap has a cool touch spout and operating handle.

Can I replace my existing tap with a Minerva tap?

As the Minerva requires a standard 35mm taphole, it can be fitted both new and retrospectively to replace an existing tap.

Do I need to pay to have a separate taphole cut in my granite worktop?

No, the Franke Minerva tap is a 3-in-1 boiling water and hot/cold water tap, no separate tap is required.

What is a ‘conditioning filter’, is it the same as a filtered water tap filter?

The Minerva tap is supplied with a Conditioning Filter which is fitted to the water entering the Heating Tank to improve the water quality and taste. The cold water is therefore not ’filtered’ and is normal mains cold water.

How often does the conditioning filter cartridge need replacing?

We recommend that filter cartridges should be replaced every 6 months.

I don’t have a lot of room under my sink for a tank, what can I do?

The unique Franke Heating Tank is only 142mm in height and can therefore be fitted under a standard 600mm cabinet behind a standard 150mm plinth, saving valuable space in your kitchen cabinet. The tank must be fitted horizontally (not vertically).

What size cabinet will I require?

The Heating Tank requires a standard 600mm kitchen cabinet.

What power supply is required for the Heating Tank?

Simply plug the Heating Tank into a normal 13 amp ring main plug socket.

What bar pressure do I need?

The Franke Minerva 3-in-1 Kettle tap requires a minimum of 1.5 bar mains cold pressure to the heating tank. Ideally the hot water pressure should be comparable, but certainly not less than 1 bar.

Do I need a Pressure Relief Valve?

A Pressure Relief Valve and Tundish are included with the Franke Heating Tank.

What is the recovery time?

The Franke Minerva tap can dispense up to 47 cups of 100°C boiling water per hour, and the recovery time from empty is 15 minutes.

My fitter has plugged in the tank before filling it with water, what can he do?

Whilst the Franke Heating Tank should only be connected to the mains once it has been filled with water, the Tank is fitted with a Reset Button which can be utilised in the event that the tank is plugged in in error.

I live in a hard water area, is this a problem?

Like any kettle this depends on how hard the water is in a particular area. If you have a particular issue with limescale, you can contact Franke FilterFlow on 0808 165 0008 to get another Inline Filter or a replacement type of filter that will do the job of reducing limescale.

I am going on holiday for 2 weeks, what should I do?

Simply unplug the Heating Tank whilst you are on holiday. On your return, plug the unit back in, and turn on the boiling water tap to drain the existing water from the tank. Once the tank has refilled and heated (15 minutes) the tap can be used in the normal way.

For longer periods away from home, following the ’Drain‘ guide contained in the Heating Tank Installation Instructions.

What is the warranty period?

The warranty period is 2 years on the Heating Tank and 2 years on the Minerva 3-in-1 Kettle Tap.

What does 'SilkSteel PVD' finish mean?

PVD means Physical Vapour Deposition. This is an industrial process that provides a very resilient and robust finish to the tap, giving it a coating-like appearance.

Here is a more detailed artical on exactly what PVD is. Wikipedia - Physical Vapor Deposition
