A Kitchen Case Study - Farnham, Surrey

Chef's Choice

As a professional chef, Lesley B* from Farnham had very clear and specific ideas about how she wanted her new kitchen to look and function. She wanted to replace the existing dated kitchen and family space, which was split into two areas by a peninsula unit. Lesley wanted something totally different - more contemporary, yet a design that would not date, with clear and uncluttered work surfaces. One of her key desires was to have a single, long work surface to cook for her extended family and friends, which Beau-Port designed into the kitchen which gives a 6-metre long work surface for Lesley to create all her delicious dishes.

Lesley B's kitchen on the day of our first meeting. A peninsula split the room in half and created a very dark space overall, thought it did have potential.

"When Jacob Johnson from Beau-Port came to see the existing kitchen, and discuss the new design he listened very carefully to exactly what I wanted to achieve in the space. He was so patient, never hurrying us or imposing his views, yet giving us really good advice, ideas, finding solutions and options for us to consider," commented Lesley. "We found him very professional and calm and not pushy, something we had experienced with other competitive kitchen companies."

When Lesley and her husband visited the 2000 sq. ft. Beau-Port showroom at Bentworth, between Alton and Basingstoke, they initially thought that their budget may not stretch to the high-quality Rotpunkt German units on display. "We were so pleasantly surprised to find that Beau-Ports pricing structure allowed us to have a really top quality kitchen for less than we were quoted by B & Q for an inferior product. Beau-Port also supplied and fitted all the Bosch appliances including dishwasher and price matched to give us the very best prices."

Lesley B's new kitchen is now FULL of light and space. A stark contrast.

The appliances are just some of Lesley's favourite things in the kitchen. "I love the hob and the ovens have great features with sensors that tell you when your cake is cooked or when your beef is cooked to just how you like it, plus the two ovens are self-cleaning as well."

Close to the preparation end of her kitchen is this full width storage cupboard.

A further way of de-cluttering the work surfaces and avoid the need for a kettle was to install a Quooker boiling tap. "It is wonderful to have hot water available all the time and it is so quick and easy," continued Lesley. "I also appreciate the instant heat that I get from the new hob and it's so easy to clean. In fact, the whole kitchen is so much easier and less time consuming to keep clean, especially with the Quartz work surfaces, which also extend up the splash back area and onto the windowsill and Jacob's idea of having the quartz extended up behind the hob as a splash-back, which looks very smart and is so practical."

Another focal point of the kitchen has been the artistic looking hob extractor by Falmec. "Jacob showed me a photo of this lovely extractor in a magazine. It really is so beautiful, eye-catching and so much sleeker and more elegant than conventional looking extractor hoods," continued Lesley. The model is a Falmec Elektra with external roof mounted ducting.

The new kitchen design also gave Lesley the space for a floor to ceiling cubed shelving unit to house her beloved collection of cookery and food books.

A custom shelving unit where Lesley stores all of her cooking books.

"Every time I walk back into my new kitchen I love the sense of spaciousness, the clean look of the kitchen and openness. It looks lighter and brighter, and I like the combination of white units with the warm looking wood effect units," said Lesley.

The kitchen units are Rotpunkt handless design, using a combination of Power MX matt lacquered doors in Stone and Zerox Horizontal SY Bardolia doors.

Lesley also commented on the installation process and service she received from Beau-Port: "When the kitchen units and appliances were delivered Jacob was here to see that everything was OK. Rob the fitter arrived and it all just happened, never any problems, it all went so smoothly. We had a deadline for completion of the kitchen as I had a family party catering for seventy people. Beau-Port said they would do it and they did. They did everything within the deadline, resolving any minor issues quickly and efficiently. We would give them ten out of ten and would use them again for other interior projects and recommend them to friends and family."
